I couldn't live without my piano but I also have many keyboards.
Having said that, in the really short term, your child can get by with a keyboard. Without a keyboard of any sort, it is difficult as your child's motivation in between lessons will sustain much more when they have an instrument to practise on.
Ideally a full-sized electric piano with fully weighted keys is something I'd recommend. It also needs 'touch-sensitivity' (most electric pianos have this) so you can press harder for louder sound and vice-versa for soft. There may not be a lot of different sounds included in the instrument but they really don't hundreds of these - just really one - the piano sound. New, you would be looking at spending about $1000-$1300 for entry level.
A real piano is the ultimate but costs money.
It's up to the circumstance of each family and cost options.
I'm happy to discuss this with individual families as needed and make recommendations.
